Quinta Do Vallado-Douro

Douro, Portugal

The Douro Valley is one of the most wonderful, imposing and dramatic territories of Europe and the world.

Quinta do Vallado, established in 1716, is one of the oldest and most famous estates in the Douro Valley. It is located on the banks of the Corgo River, a tributary of the Douro River, right next to its mouth and close to the town of Peso da Régua.

It belonged to the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira and remains to this day in the hands of her descendants.

Surrounded by rolling vineyards, this contemporary winery and hotel occupies a 1700s manor house and a modern annex. It's 4 km from the Museu do Douro and 13 km from the Castelo de Lamego.

The 5 manor house rooms have exposed stone walls and a mix of vintage and modern decor. They come with complimentary wine; some have patios or balconies. Suites add separate living rooms, while the 8 annex rooms offer balconies and chic decor.

VINEYARDS - DOURO

Located in north-eastern Portugal, in the Douro River basin, surrounded by mountains that give it unique mesological and climatic characteristics, the Douro Demarcated Region was the first in the world to be demarcated and regulated, back in 1756, under the auspices of the Marquis de Pombal. It is in this region that one of the “classic” wines of the world is produced - Port.

Spanning a total area of approximately 250 000 hectares, it is divided into three naturally distinct sub-regions - Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. The region is characterised by its schist slopes and a Mediterranean climate, with very cold winters and very hot and dry summers.

WINERY & CELLAR

The new winery, built in 2009 is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to produce dry wines and Ports. The architect chosen to develop this project was Francisco Vieira de Campos, from Porto School of Architecture, and has since earned several architecture awards.

However, alongside technological advancements,, Quinta do Vallado still uses the traditional foot-treading method in granite lagares for some wines.

Gateway to the Alto Douro, the sun-bleached town of Régua abuts the Rio Douro at the western edge of the demarcated port-wine region. As the region’s largest riverside town, it grew into a major port-wine entrepôt in the 18th century, and remains an important transport junction – thanks in part to the hulking IP3 bridge that soars overhead.

The town itself, set along a busy highway above the river, doesn’t have a lot of charm. Most visitors stop in just long enough to visit the excellent Museu do Douro and get recommendations, maps and directions to nearby wineries.

For those who linger, Régua makes a convenient base to visit the port-wine country, cruise the Rio Douro and take a scenic riverside train ride. Most tourists stick to the scenic riverfront, but the quaint old town one block uphill is an almost exclusively local scene, and well worth a wander.

WINE TOURISM - Quinta do Vallado Hotel & Casa do Rio Hotel.

Along with wine production, Wine Tourism is currently a major activity for Quinta do Vallado, which owns two small hotels: Quinta do Vallado at Régua and Casa do Rio at Foz Côa.

Quinta do Vallado

Quinta do Vallado Wine Hotel, at Régua, has 13 guest rooms, of which five in the Traditional House and eight in the Modern Building.

Casa do Rio

With only eight rooms, located between the vineyards and the river, and with a spectacular view over the Douro.
