Castello di Perno
Monforte d'Alba, Italy
The spectacular Castello Di Perno doninates the village of the same name , an hamlet of Monforte d'Alba since 1932.
A truly a magnificent place to behold.
At the end of the seventies of the last century the Castle was bought by the most important italian publisher Giulio Einaudi who made it its secondary headquarters, twin of that of Via Biancamano in Turin, and a working residence for its writers.
Since 2012, the Castle has been owned by Gregorio Gitti, professor of civil law at the University of Milan and lawyer, also in the Lombard capital. The project of the Gitti’s family from the beginning was double: to restore the Castle of Perno to its history, both to the most recent one driving it like a home for culture and to the oldest one of the cultivation of vines and the vinification of its own grapes.
A once-powerful city-state whose centre sported more than 100 towers, Alba is considered the capital of the Langhe, and has big-city confidence and energy while retaining all the grace and warmth of a small rural town. Alba's considerable gastronomic reputation comes courtesy of its white truffles, dark chocolate and wine.
Contemporary Arts Castello di Perno – Contemporary Arts is a concept with multiple meanings. First of all, it is evocative of a place that has, in the Langa area, evidence and recognition.
The village of Perno is a fifth set between the ridges of Serralunga and Castiglione Falletto, visible at a wide range from Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Roddi and even Sinio. It overlooks the most beautiful vineyards located in the south between east and west, from the Vigna Rionda vineyard until to the Cannubi hill.
However, Perno does not respond only visually to the literal meaning of its medieval toponymy, it carries with it a relevant, more recent history unknown to most.
The Castello di Perno was in fact the headquarter, twin of that of Via Biancamano in Turin, of the Giulio Einaudi Publishing House, in particular the residence for the study and artistic activity of Einaudian writers (among the most assiduous Primo Levi visitors) and theater of seminars and meetings between the greatest personalities of the Italian culture of the Republican age.
In other words, Perno, and not just the castle, was a home for culture and wants to go back to being so, for this reason it opens up to contemporary arts and therefore will concretely open to welcoming artists who will return to exhibit their works, to writers and musicians, to experts and to researchers who will return to discuss literature and music, history and philosophy, law and economics.
